The Ultimate Guide to Digital Nomad Visas: Where to Go and How to Apply (2025)

Many of us here at Mango Moon Food Services have worked and lived in several countries and we found after 2020 the desire for location independence grew exponentially as the pandemic transitioned so many people to working remotely, but back then travel wasn’t accessible. Now in 2025, travel is accessible once again and companies are still allowing for remote work. With this we have noticed an uptick of people thinking “home is where the wifi is”. We definitely live by this statement and our brand is based on encouraging digital creators to do the same– but we also want to help others avoid the many pitfalls we’ve seen creators go through during their journeys.

The Dream of Location Independence

In today’s digital age, many of us dream of earning an income while traveling the world, setting our own schedules, and working from anywhere with a stable internet connection. The rise of remote work has made this dream more attainable than ever, allowing people to escape the confines of a traditional office and embrace a more flexible, adventurous lifestyle. However, working remotely while traveling comes with its own set of challenges—especially when it comes to legalities and visas. Reminder: We are not legal professionals– we have just worked with many, and we like reading through rules and guidelines 🤓

Why Digital Nomad Visas Are Important

As the digital nomad lifestyle gains popularity, having the correct visa is crucial for ensuring a legal and hassle-free experience. Many countries have strict immigration and labor laws, meaning that working remotely without the proper documentation can lead to serious consequences. Without a valid digital nomad visa, remote workers may face fines, deportation, or even bans from re-entering a country. Additionally, working without authorization can lead to tax complications, as many nations require workers to pay local taxes if they reside there for an extended period. Obtaining a digital nomad visa not only ensures compliance with local laws but also provides benefits such as legal residency, access to banking services, and the ability to stay in a country for longer periods without the risk of violating visa conditions.

So why bother…

Listen, we get it, it’s a lot of work and a lot of paperwork that you might just want to bypass but we promise going through the legal channels is worth it. Especially in a digital market, where we live and what we broadcast is very public. If you broadcast your blog is based in Mexico, but you are an American citizen, you could get banned very quickly. The assumption other countries “won’t care” is completely incorrect and could get you into a world of trouble.

Things you need a visa to do:

  • Rent an apartment long term
  • Pay for utilities
  • Set up Wifi (How are you going to make home where the wifi is without wifi?)
  • Cell phone (eSims are the way to go now a days but if you want an old school tried and true then you got to have a visa)
  • Business partnerships, sponsorships etc. (Want to collab with a restaurant? Not without a visa you can’t)
  • If you want to claim your business travels, but your business is registered in another country you can’t really explain that when tax season comes up without a visa.
  • Access to healthcare and emergency services. Without a visa it can be a lot more difficult and more expensive to access these.
  • Travel insurance, renters insurance, if you’re traveling with everything your business owns you will need insurance and a reason you are in the new country with these assets.
  • Credit cards, banking etc. Why pay currency conversions if you don’t have to?

Okay, we think you get why you need a Digital Nomad Visa now what is it?

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is a special type of visa that allows remote workers to legally live in a country while working for a foreign employer or running an online business. These visas usually offer longer stays than traditional tourist visas, sometimes allowing up to a year or more of residency with the possibility of renewal. Most digital nomad visas require proof of stable remote income, health insurance, and other financial requirements to ensure you can support yourself while living abroad.
